Pekanbaru - Today, Wednesday (22/7/2010), Teluk Meranti community together with Greenpeace, Jikalahari and Yayasan Mitra Insani, starts to restore (ecology recovery) in the area with high carbon in Kampar Peninsula, Riau, Sumatera.
These activities include the activity of canal blocking which already been done to protect the peat and the commencement of nine thousand tree seedlings, planted in the broken peat area and fire prone area. Teluk Meranti Community which incorporated in Kampar Peninsula Rescue Society Forum (FMPSK) took the initiative to do rehabilitation. In the last two months they seeded the seedling in the central of peat protection area, Teluk Meranti, Pelalawan.
Today, six thousands seed will be planted by community and Greenpeace activist for Kampar Peninsula ecosystem restoration. In the previous 2 weeks, Teluk Meranti community build dam in canal at Tanjung Sesenduk as their effort to protect peat land from drought and destruction. "The reason that we restore Kampar Peninsula is because we want this forest more sustain and long lasting. We have dependency to the forest not only for livelihood, but also for our culture. This restoration prove that community is very serious to protect the forest. The government should support this effort and take action to stop forest destruction and peat damage," said the Chief of FMPSK, Deli Saputra.
Since 2007, Teluk Meranti community together with some NGO’s such as Mitra Insani, Jikalahari and Greenpeace has blocked at least 23 canals in Teluk Binjai village and Teluk Meranti village in order to stop river pollution from peat drought. " Saving Kampar Peninsula is become commitment of the community since few years due to high dependency to the river and forest which exists in Kampar Peninsula,” said Mitra Insani Director, Zainuri Hasyim.
Forest campaigner of Greenpeace South East Asia, Rusmadya said, Indonesia government should give real support to the community. Now it is President SBY turn to show his serious commitment to take action to reduce greenhouse emission. Recently Greenpeace has blocked the activities of the pontoon that loading tens thousands cubic meters of wood from Kampar Peninsula natural forest which brought by the pulp company PT RAPP; to highlight how the Kampar Peninsula forest were destroyed and asked the government to conduct quick action to stop this.
"Community has proved their support to president SBY and president should also support the community in Kampar Peninsula to stop forest destruction which being done by APRIL. Without his quick response and action to protect Kampar Peninsula as part of national moratorium of deforestation and full protection for peat forest, the destruction which being happened will undermine Indonesia commitment for emission reduction," added Rusmadya.
